Summary

Lisa calls Zack; she's looking for her cordless handset phone, but Zack doesn't see it in his room. On Zack's other line is Gilby... it seems that Gilby's phone number was printed in a magazine as a teen helpline, which is completely incorrect, so now Gilby's getting massive amounts of phone calls from troubled teens needing dating advice. Gilby cuts off Zack and goes back to his "helpful" phone calls.

Zack, J.C. and Gilby are at the diner the next day and Gilby is recounting his tales of helpful advice in regards to his helpline. However Ted interrupts their conversation flow, Ted, it seems, has been getting some help from a girl named Valerie to get a gift for his mom. Although it seems he's been flirting with Valerie all week over the phone (they've never met) and he's inadvertently cheating on Nancy with Valerie. Gilby then suggests that JC pretend to be Ted when he goes to pick up the gift. Thinking it's a brilliant idea, Ted hands over his credit card to JC.

Gilby is checking his messages for the teen helpline at Zack's house when suddenly Lisa's handset starts ringing in Zack's room. Zack suddenly gets the slightly not-so-brilliant idea to listen in on Lisa's phone calls.

Meanwhile, Ted shows up at Valerie's work to pick up the antique for Ted's mom. He's surprised to find that Valerie is gorgeous. She's a little surprised that he sounds so different in person as compared to on the phone.

The next day, JC asks to borrow Ted's car because he's got another date with Valerie. Ted isn't pleased, he wants JC to get rid of Valerie so that he won't have to deal with the situation anymore. But JC says he'll take Valerie out to a nice dinner and let her down easy.

Zack is bored to tears listening in on Lisa's conversations. Suddenly Lisa and Nancy start talking about Derek, and the entire conversation seems to imply that Lisa has been having sex with Derek. Heartbroken, Zack calls Gilby complaining about his sore luck with Lisa.

JC and Valerie are sitting in Ted's car, finishing up their date. JC is about to tell Valerie that he's not really Ted, when suddenly she notices Ted's pass to the Crystal Ridge Country Club. She REALLY wants to play tennis there sometime. She leans over and kisses JC, silencing him from admitting that he's not really Ted.

Gilby's next call from the helpline is from a girl who just lost a beauty pageant, she claims she's going to end it all. She freaks Gilby out because he's scared she's going to kill herself, however she's only planning to quit participating in beauty pageants. Gilby urges her to meet with him before she does anything drastic and she agrees.

Zack is listening in again on Lisa and Nancy's conversation when he finally overhears that Derek has been talking too long to Lisa and not actually having sex with her. Lisa says that she might agree to date Zack if he just asked her out without any gimmicks. Zack promptly calls her and asks her to come over later.

Ted and JC run into each other at the Country Club the next day. Unfortunately they're both there with their dates, Nancy and Valerie, respectively. And to make matters worse, the girls have met each other in the bathroom and join Ted and JC together. The girls wants to play doubles, much to the chagrin of Ted and JC, especially since it's going to get super confusing since Valerie thinks JC is the real Ted.

Meanwhile, Gilby meets up with Melinda the beauty pageant contestant at a coffee shop. After an awkward conversation where Gilby tries to make Melinda feel better he finally realizes that she doesn't want to kill herself, she's only quiting competing in beauty pageants. Melinda storms off, leaving Gilby behind.

Meanwhile during the tennis match, JC is injured and Valerie can't figure out why Nancy is being so sarcastic about Ted's playing. Ted's mom comes over and suddenly the jig is up. Valerie says she's dating Ted since they met a few days ago, but Nancy insists that SHE'S dating Ted and Valerie is dating JC. The boys sneak off, aware that they're about to get into big trouble, while Valerie and Nancy try to sort out who's Ted is whose.

Lisa goes over to Zack's place later on. He sits her down and asks her down and tells her he's done with all his gimmicks and he asks her to go out with him. They're about to kiss when suddenly HER phone headset starts ringing and she realizes that Zack's been listening in on all her calls. She runs out, angry that he's pulled yet another stunt on her.
