Summary
Logan and Asha are busy looking up a hitman when Max
arrives at Logan's apartment. Logan and Asha don't need
Max's help though and Logan pretty much ignores Max's
request to go out to Crash for Halloween that night.
Normal is having a hard time getting the attention of his
workers at Jam Pony, a courier business. Sketchy in particular is dressed up for Halloween
as Dracula, he shows Normal one of his tabloid newspapers
with articles about mutant freaks. Regardless of what
Normal wants, the messengers of Jam Pony threaten to trash
the place if they don't get out early from work tonight.
Rafer shows up at Crash, inviting Max out tonight to
Crash. Original Cindy and Max bike over to Joshua's place
to drop off some groceries. Dog-boy Joshua answers the
knocking door, only to find that it's a bunch of trick or
treaters out on his porch. They scream when they see him,
but it was only to frighten him, and not because of his
dog-like appearance; they just assumed he was wearing a
costume. Max and Original Cindy arrive at the door and shoo
the kids away by handing them money. Joshua realizes that
Halloween is the one night in the year where he can
actually go outside into the real world without being
attacked or scaring anybody. Max, however, doesn't like the
idea because it leaves Joshua far too exposed, even if it
is Halloween and everybody thinks he's wearing a costume.
Original Cindy tries to convince Max that it'd be okay for
Joshua to go out, but she won't hear of it. She'd rather
that Joshua stay safe and sound inside. A dejected Joshua
sits down in his chair to read yet another book since he
can't do anything else.
Max, after boiling dozens upon dozens of buckets of water,
can finally relax in a nice warm bath. She closes her eyes
and relaxes in the tub. Original Cindy awakens her later to
let her know that Rafer is waiting for her. Max quickly
dresses in her normal clothing and then asks Rafer what
he's dressed as. He says he's a genetically altered human
who's escaped from a lab. He promptly shows her the
barcode he pasted on to the back of his neck. Max is
shocked, but quickly recovers. Rafer then asks her if
she's willing to meet his mother, even though he knows it's
a strange request. Rafer's mother turns out to be a very
bizarre fortune teller. Rafer's mother gazes into a
crystal ball, asking questions about Max. She can see that
Max has no name, only numbers. She sees dark secrets and
that Max is running from something dangerous. She also
claims to see the face of death in her crystal ball and she
swoons in her seat. Suddenly Joshua shows up at
Rafer's mother's house while Rafer and his mother are in
the other room. Joshua takes Max outside and shows him
Sally, a man lying on the ground with his head twisted all
the way around. He's from Manticore as well and he's made
out of cartilege instead of bone, which is why his head is
twisted all the way around. Max and Joshua try to twist his
head back into position but they only succeed in yanking
Sally's head right off his body. While Max is holding
Sally's head, the rest of his body runs off. Rafer comes
outside to find out what's going on and they ask to borrow
his car, which turns out to be an ambulance. Sally suggests getting in touch with some
transgenic friends in order to track down his body. Sally
first calls Katarina, a trangenic who's half cat, half
human. Katarina is slightly pissed off with Sally because
he's stood her up three times in a row now. Katarina gets in
touch with her lizard-friend Deeter in the hopes of putting
together a search party for Sally's body. Rafer drives
Max, Joshua and Sally's head to a diner where they meet up
with Katarina and Deeter. Max is trying to pass off that
they're doing a scavenger hunt but Rafer is just confused
by Max's strange friends. When Rafer goes off to the bathrom, Max
tells the rest of the transgenics that Rafer is NOT to
find out that they're all Manticore freaks. Max asks the
bodiless Sally where he's supposed to be right now and he
thinks his body might be at Jam Pony picking up a package.
Unfortunately, Normal is also eating at the diner where Max
and her friends are seated. Normal gets up and introduces himself to the group. As he's doing so, he sneezes; he's allergic
to cats, but he can't figure out why he's sneezing when
there aren't any cats around. Katarina looks away, knowing
that her cat DNA is probably setting off Normal's
allergies. Max and company bolt from the diner.
They finally get to Jam Pony and start riffling through the
packages, trying to find Sally's particular package. Just
as they begin their search, Normal and a bunch of thugs
walk into Jam Pony. He hands out pictures of Max and her
friends to the group telling them that a headless freak
stole a package from Jam Pony and that Max and her friends
are transgenic freaks that need to be captured. Normal
sends his thugs off to find the transgenics. Sally then
remembers that he was supposed to meet someone at the bar
Crash with the package, much to Max's disbelief.
Max, Katarina, Deeter, Joshua and Rafer show up at Crash
looking for their headless body. Max finds the headless
body in the backroom where he's hitting on some redhead. He
runs off as soon as he "sees" Max. He rushes out of Crash
before Max can catch him. Max and her gang jump into
Rafer's ambulance and chase down the headless man who's on
a motorcycle. Unfortunately, the ambulance runs out of gas
and dies. Finally Max figures out that Sally is the hitman
that Logan was talking about and he's out to get Pierpont
Lemkin. Max changes the plan and they all head over to
Logan's to tell him the news. While Logan and Max do some
research the others play charades with Asha. Max finally gets out of Sally that they're after a priest called McAllister who the hits been put out on. Rafer begins to figure out that Max and her friends are mutants, so she knocks him out. Max and the gang leave Logan's and head over to the warehouse where father McAllister is supposed to be. They all split up to find the headless body. Max runs into him first. She first takes his gun away and then they go at it, punching and kicking, each trying to gain the upperhand. Just as the headless body is about to shoot down Father McAllister, Max jumps in and kicks him down four floors to the bottom floor of the warehouse. Max tries to convince Father McAllister that the headless man was just trying to play a prank on him for Halloween. The cops rush in and arrest Joshua, even though Max tries to stop them, she cowardly says that she's not one of them, them being the mutants. Original Cindy joins her on the Space Needle later on that night telling her that now Joshua's going to be stuck in a cage for the rest of his life, and all because Max denied who she really is.
Suddenly, Max finds herself back in her bathtub, she just had the weirdest dream. Original Cindy tells her that Rafer is waiting for her, but Max says to get rid of him, she's got something else to do. Max gets dressed and goes over to Joshua's place. She tells him that they have to stick together, so she's taking him out into the night.
